James J. Hill, the "Empire Builder," gave his name to Empire Way in Seattle. His Great Northern Railway brought transcontinental rail service to Seattle from St. Paul in 1893. In 1982 this major thoroughfare bisecting the Rainier Valley was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Way in honor of the civil rights leader.
